A police chase ended with a vehicle overturning on Freeport Beach in North East early Friday morning.

It was reported just before 4:45 a.m. as a water rescue.

A red SUV went into the water during the pursuit and had to be towed from the beach.

One person was trapped inside, but rescuers were able to get that person out. Rescue crews took the driver to the hospital

The car leaked transmission and engine oil onto the beach. North East Emergency Management, the Erie County Health Department and the Department of Environmental Protection had to remove 40 tons of contaminated sand and bring in 40 tons of new sand.

There's no word on what prompted the pursuit.

Erie News Now's calls Friday afternoon to State Police and North East Police Department were not returned.
