Cheerleading Will Take Olympic Stage In 2024
Cheerleading is going to be the newest Olympic sport, taking the stage in the 2024 Olympic Games.
It took the international cheer union 12 years to push to have cheerleading in the Olympics and finally, it was just announced that the sport will take the stage in 2024.
“It’s definitely motivating and expiring for all little boys and girls who want to do cheerleading,” Maggie Born, the program director at Cheer Vibe, a local Allstar Cheer gym said.
She said it is about time that the Olympic committee recognizes cheerleading.
Cheerleading is an intense sport that is now getting national attention. It is not only competitive, but physically demanding.
“It looks pretty easy in the air, but it’s not as easy as one may think,” Born said. “You definitely need to be conditioned and our athletes train several hours during the week to get to that level for them to be able to throw a routine that would meet the score sheet.”
Many people often question that cheerleading is even a sport and Born said she believes once this sport is showcased in the Olympics, people might think otherwise.
“It’s very similar to gymnastics and acrobatics but we also do more stunting components, we do pyramid, a dance component, all thrown into that two minute and thirty second routine,” Born said.
She knows this will be inspiring for her cheerleaders like Hallie Learn, an 11-year-old on one of their competitive teams, who said she was excited when she learned an international audience would soon see her sport.
“It was good and exciting,” Learn said.
Cheer Vibe all-star team has won over 50 national titles in the past decade, so it is safe to say the coach definitely believes she can see some of these young athletes traveling to the Olympic Games someday.
