Drivers will see lane restrictions and rolling closures on Interstate 90 starting Sept. 7, as PennDOT demolishes the Route 18 bridge, which was damaged when an overheight vehicle hit the bridge Wednesday.

The shoulder on the Route 18 bridge is currently closed. After the Labor Day holiday, the Route 18 bridge will be closed completely and work to remove the structure will begin.

Detours will be posted for Route 18 and I-90 traffic. They may vary as the work progresses. Drivers are asked to watch out for changing traffic patterns and follow posted detour signs.

Daytime temporary lane restrictions will be in place on Interstate 90 near the bridge starting Sept. 8, as preliminary demolition work starts.

Nighttime rolling closures will be used for the removal of the bridge deck and beams. These are expected to be in place between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sept. 13-15.

A detour for Route 18 through traffic will remain in place until the new bridge is built and opened in 2022. It was set to be replaced as part of the I-90 reconstruction project and will have tear drop roundabouts at each end.
