Almost 200 children are poisoned every year by lead, and only 21 percent of kids are screened for it, according to the Lead Free Promise Project (LFPP).

The group partnered with the Erie Redevelopment Authority to hold a family information session Thursday afternoon at the MLK Center.

Families learned how they can prevent lead paint poisoning and what to do if a child has been exposed. It's a serious issue that could cause learning and developmental delays.

Erie County has the 10th highest rate of child lead poisoning in the state, according to project leaders.

"The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Erie was awarded a $3 million grant at the beginning of this year," said Kelly Neville, Erie Redevelopment Authority. "We are set to remediate approximately 180 homes throughout Erie County with that funding."

Six parent sessions will be held across the state to educate parents about lead poisoning, testing and prevention.
