Efforts are underway to make an Oliver Hazard Perry-Class Frigate a new tourist attraction along Erie’s bayfront.

Two Erie County-based research and consulting firms are conducting an online survey and economic impact study to learn more about the economic potential of bringing the EX-SS HALYBURTON FFG-40 – a decommissioned Oliver Perry Class Frigate – to the area.

The research gathered will be used for the Phase II U.S. Navy application. It will also help gauge visitor and tourism spending.

The brief survey asks questions about people’s perceptions, potential expenditures, and interest level in visiting the ship and museum. Feedback from people across the county, region, state and nation including veterans that may have served on this ship is being sought.

The survey can be found here and should be completed by Dec. 10. Each person will be entered to win one-of-three $50 Visa gift cards.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Erie County to gather research and data that show the U.S. Navy that this market is a viable home that could attract visitors to a retired vessel,” said Dr. Joe Pfadt, executive director of Oliver Hazard Perry Shipyard, in a statement.
