With daily case counts high all around northwestern Pennsylvania, local hospitals are feeling the strain, and doctors are urging caution around the holiday season.

Both AHN Saint Vincent and UPMC Hamot have more than 40 COVID-19 patients in their hospitals. That is the most they have seen since December of last year.

They said they are managing, but hospitals are usually busy this time of year, and dozens of COVID-19 cases mean staff are stretched thin.

With the holidays approaching, doctors say smaller gatherings can help limit the virus's spread.

They urge vaccination, and they say if you're eligible, get a booster shot for an extra level of protection.

"Clearly, if they're feeling sick, not feeling well, they shouldn't get together with one another," said Dr. Chris Clark, president of AHN Saint Vincent. "That's pretty obvious, but try to keep your gatherings small if possible. It can help to reduce the spread in gatherings."

Doctors say common sense is key. There was a big surge in cases after the holidays last year, and local hospital leaders hope to avoid that this season.
