A man was shot by a family member in a hunting accident near Edinboro Wednesday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Game Commission told Erie News Now.

It was reported near Irish and Middle Rd. in Cussewago Township around 1:22 p.m. while five people were deer hunting on private property.

The victim - identified as Lawrence Pavolko, 58, of Albion - suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right chest.

Game Commission officials said Nathan Pavolko, 28, of Springboro, fired a shot from a rifle that hit the victim.

It happened while three of the hunters were driving deer, while the other two were posted at a stationary location, according to the Game Commission. During the drive, a deer was spotted by the furthest driver who shot. Moments later, the victim saw a deer and took a shot. The middle driver presumably saw the same deer and shot, and yelling was heard afterwards, a report on the incident said.

The other four hunters provided aid until EMTs arrived. A medical helicopter took the victim to UPMC Hamot for treatment.

State Police were also called to the scene to investigate.

The victim was wearing fluorescent orange on the head, chest and back, according to the report.
