Chain-Reaction Crash involving 4 Vehicles Blamed for Interstate 90 Closure Friday
A chain-reaction crash near a work zone involving four vehicles shut down part of Interstate 90 in western Erie County on Friday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
It was reported near mile marker 12 just after 3 p.m. Friday.
One of the vehicles slowed down while approaching the construction area, and two other vehicles did the same, troopers said. However, a semi approached and did not slow down, hitting one of the vehicles and causing the others to hit one another.
The driver of the semi had to be freed from the vehicle and was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment, State Police said. No one else in the vehicles was injured.
The accident shut down the westbound lanes from Exit 16 (Route 98, Fairview/Franklin Center) to Exit 9 (Route 18, Girard/Platea) for multiple hours and caused a traffic backup on Route 98 from Interstate 90 to Route 20.
At least two of the four vehicles were semi trucks, but troopers have not released any additional information as of Friday night.
