The Erie Otters received a commitment Thursday from 2022 second overall pick Malcolm Spence. The two sides agreed on an OHL standard player contract. Spence becomes the first member of the Otters 2022 draft class to commit to the team.

“The Otters stood out to me because they aren’t just an organization, they are a family that cares and puts the players first,” said Spence. “To play and wear that jersey is truly an honor. It’s a dream come true.”

Spence is coming off a season where he was named the Player of the Year in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. The left-handed forward had 56 points in 28 games with the Mississauga Senators U16 AAA team. He added 13 points, including six goals on the Senators' run to the OHL Cup Championship.

“Malcolm is dynamic and energetic with an edge and willingness to succeed.  His attention to detail and mature approach to how he plays the game is something we are very excited to be adding to our organization.  Malcolm isn’t to be outdone off the ice, as his exceptional abilities are also shown as a person, player, and teammate, which our organization is excited to be adding to our group and sharing with the community,” said Dave Brown, Erie Otters general manager. “We are excited to grow with Malcolm in assisting him to achieve his personal goals, while our organization grows and the community grows stronger.”

“[Malcolm’s] offensive talents are off the charts. He sees the game really well, he thinks the game really well, he has a hunger to get to the net, his skating jumps off the page,” said BJ Adams, Erie Otters head coach. “I really love the way he attacks the net.”
