An Erie organization is benefitting from a big boost from one of the area's biggest businesses.

Wabtec Corporation presented United Way of Erie County with $170,000.

The money is part of the company's yearly campaign, which is funded by donations from Wabtec employees.

Wabtec also matched employee contributions by 50 percent.

United Way's mission is to fight poverty and break the generational cycle of poverty locally.

"We are razor-sharp focused on breaking the cycle of poverty," said Laurie Root, president of United Way of Erie County. "We want all students to succeed. We want to level the playing field for all children."

"Now, more than ever as employees and as a company, we need to step up, lean in and be engaged," said Christie Drabic, program management leader for freight equipment business at Wabtec. "This is just one way that we do that. We love to get out and volunteer; we give of our treasure and of our time."

Wabtec is a longtime supporter of the United Way and its community schools initiative.
