The U.S. Brig Niagara will give 30 high school students from Erie County the chance to participate in the live-aboard sailing program this summer.

The program, which is usually priced at $1,800, will allow the students to participate for free if accepted by the scholarship run by Erie Insurance.

Students will then have the chance to become a crewmember of the Niagara for almost two weeks.

To apply for the scholarship, students must graduate in 2022 and write an essay of 500 words to be submitted online.

“You know, sailing Niagara, you actually 100% become part of the crew,” said Captain of the Niagara, William Sabatini. “You're going to be steering the ship, you'll be going aloft, standing lookout, doing dishes, everything we do you do with us.”

While living on the ship, students will participate in the Tall Ships event, which brings together ships and sailors from around the world.

“Erie Insurance is giving Erie students the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Sabatini. “This is an experience that they will carry with them through the rest of their lives.”
