Two years into the Covid 19 pandemic and new initiatives to slow the spread of the virus are still being introduced to our area.

Lecom's Institute for Successful Aging on Schaper Avenue off West 38th Street has been home to testing for Covid-19 and getting vaccinated against the virus for a year and a half. But now, it will be a test to treat site. This means you can get tested for Covid-19 and if it's positive or if you bring a positive test result, you now can get antiviral pills before you leave.

Jaime Babiak, the Director of Operations for LECOM's Institute of Successful Aging said, “I think something like this is definitely different, antiviral treatment options are available at the retail pharmacies so this gives a different opportunity and availability to folks in the Erie community."

This test and treat site has been open for about a month and officials at LECOM said they've gotten positive feedback so far. Officials at the Erie County Health Department thinks this will be a great resource for the Erie community.

Erin Mrenak, the Director for the Erie County Health Department said, "It allows us to have a great response to any surges we might have if we have increase cases or if new variant shows up. It allows us to adapt quickly to treatment options or if more people need access to the treatments that are available.”

The test and treatment site is familiar to the community and will allow people to get tested and the medication they need without leaving their car, all for free.

Erie County Executive Brenton Davis believes this is another way to get ahead in case another surge were to arise. “I look at this as putting a life preserver on a boat, you may or may not need it. What this is doing is being proactive, it’s putting a life preserver on the boat, in the event that we do need it. We hope that we don’t have a major surge, but this is just being proactive to put the resources in place in the event that we do have a surge", said County Executive Davis.

This testing and treatment site will be open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and then Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. The LECOM Institute for Successful Aging is located at 3910 Schaper Avenue in Erie.

It is free and no appointment is necessary.
