Police arrested a man for killing his grandmother in a 1988 Erie cold case, City of Erie Police and the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Jeremy C. Brock, 55, was arrested at work in Austin, Texas, without incident on Monday. He faces charges of homicide, robbery, burglary, theft and tampering.

He is accused of killing Helen Vogt, 76, who was found dead in her townhome on Zimmerman Rd. in the City of Erie on July 23, 1988. Brock was 21 years old at the time, and Vogt was living alone after husband died in February 1988.

A neighbor called 911 after seeing Vogt's Buick LeSabre backing out of her garage at a high-speed then went over to check on her, according to a report on the cold case. Blood was found throughout the condo, and Vogt was found brutally beaten and stabbed 50 times in her bedroom, investigators said.

Police found two knives and a two-prong fork with blood. Several items were also found missing from Vogt's home.

The car was later found in a Dayton, Ohio, parking garage in August 1988.

Advancements in DNA technology are being credited in the arrest, according to the district attorney.

Brock's DNA was found on a washcloth in Vogt's bathroom and compared to samples retrieved as part of a search warrant.

He is currently being held behind bars on an extradition warrant in Travis County, Texas.
