The newest social media trend sparking thefts across Pennsylvania.

The 'KIA Challenge' is a viral tiktok trend with step by step videos on how to steal push to start vehicles. The target of these thefts are primarily Kias and Hyundais. These viral videos show thieves breaking into the car's ignition and starting the vehicle using USB cables. They then either abandon or crash the car after taking it out for a spin.

Hyundai released the following statement:

"Hyundai Motor America is concerned with the rise in local auto thefts. The safety and well-being of our customers and the community is and will remain our top priority. These vehicles meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and engine immobilizers are standard equipment on all new Hyundai vehicles."

Erie News Now has reached out to Erie Police for comment and is awaiting a response on how this is impacting our area. However, police in surrounding areas are reporting rises in thefts and recommend everyone lock their cars and stay on high alert.
