The Annual Dan Rice Days Festival, that is held the first full weekend in August every year, kicks off this weekend.

The festival commemorates the many contributions that Daniel McClaren (aka Dan Rice) made to the town of Girard.

Dan Rice was an established performer and circus owner, and his most lasting legacy in Girard is the erection of the marble monument that still stands on Main Street.

Rice never took a definite position during the Civil War, causing controversy, but after the war he provided financial assistance to those in need in both the North and South.

The festival begins today, August 3 and will continue until Sunday, August 7.

The festival will include craft vendors/merchants, free entertainment, sports, local food, educational activities, a parade, and a 5K run.
