After a 3 year old here in Pennsylvania was hospitalized due to Powassan complications, residents are now faced with new concerns of previously rare tick borne diseases.

Weeks after noticing a tick on his shoulder, the boy's condition deteriorated and he was diagnosed with Powassan virus. Although rare, cases have been on the rise in the Great Lakes region.

"Try to save the tick if you can get it out in one piece," said Epidemiologist Dr. Becky Dawson. "A physician may want it to do further testing to see if it has any disease."

Dr. Dawson recommended that those spending time in tall grass or wooded areas wear long clothing and do a tick check once back inside.
