Suspect in Salman Rushdie Stabbing Arrives to Jail
We continue to follow breaking news out of Chautauqua County where author, Salman Rushdie was attacked as he was about to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution.
Overnight, our news partners at WNY News Now was at the jail when the suspect, 24 year old Hadi Matar from New Jersey was transferred to the Chautauqua County jail late Friday night from the New York State Police barracks in Jamestown.
Matar charged the stage where "The Satanic Verses" author and advocate of free speech was set to speak yesterday morning. The suspect stabbed Rushdie multiple times, including in the neck. Rushdie is currently being treated at UPMC Hamot.
Meantime, the Chautauqua Institution hosted a community vigil at its Hall of Philosophy after Rushdie was attacked.
The president of the Chautauqua Institution, Michael Hill spoke. There was also with prayers, reflection and music.
According to Chautauqua Institution officials, religious services that are normally scheduled for Saturdays will proceed as planned. They are restricting grounds access still to those with a long-term gate pass.
They hope to resume activities tonight with the ballet and orchestra performance, but have not finalized that decision yet.
