White House Responds to Congressman Mike Kelly's Tweet over Student Loan Forgiveness
The White House is calling out Republican Congressman Mike Kelly for his comments on student loan forgiveness.
After the Biden administration announced the plan, Kelly posted a message on Twitter, which said, "Asking plumbers and carpenters to pay off loans of Wall Street advisers and lawyers isn't just unfair, it's also bad policy."
The White House was quick to pick up on what it apparently saw as a pretty hypocritical comment.
It tweeted back, pointing out the Republican Congressman had close to $1 million worth of federal loans from the Paycheck Protection Program forgiven.
Kelly was one of at least four Republican lawmakers to which the White House responded regarding the issue including Georgia's Marjorie Taylor Green. They all criticized the student loan forgiveness plan after having their own loans wiped out.
Erie News Now reached out to Kelly's office, which referred us to a reply posted Friday afternoon:
A Democrat governor declared my family's business non-essential and shut our doors. This money saved over 160 essential jobs in Western Pennsylvania during the pandemic.
PPP loans are designed to be forgiven. Student loans are not. Big difference!
