A 90-year-old Girard man received a special honor, as the borough celebrated his 90th birthday.

Dave Shaffer grew up in Girard on the former Battles family estate that's now the Girard Battles White House Gardens.

Even at 90, he serves as a volunteer there, sharing the history of Girard.

The gardens hosted a party in his honor, and the Mayor presented Shaffer with a proclamation, applauding his work in the community.

Shaffer said he's thrilled by the honor and hopes to continue volunteering.

"This is a real honor, believe me it truly is, and I enjoy having folks recognize it too," said Shaffer. "My life would've loved it, I wish she could be here besides me but that's life."

Shaffer and his wife tended to the gardens for years. She died last year.
