Weather-related power outages are unavoidable, but you can always prepare for them.

September is National Preparedness month, and Penelec Spokesman Todd Meyers shared tips with Erie News Now on how to safe safe and be prepared when the power goes out during storms:

If you know a storm is coming, charge your phone and other electronics.

Penelec advises that everyone has an emergency kit on hand with items such as a flashlight, extra batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable foods.

Do not use candles to see in the dark. Candles are a major fire hazard during storms because they can easily be knocked over.

Todd also warns that if you see any downed wires, stay at least 30ft away and report the hazard immediately.
