Pure, free outdoor fun that has spanned decades can be found in Summit Township.

The township parks and recreation director Tony Davis knows that well.

Picnicana Park off old French Road has a nearly 50 year presence that's helped create many memories.

"Some of the equipment is still there," said Davis. "The merry go round, those are the original ones I remember when we were kids."

Summit Township native Katelyn Pace knows that well, she's been coming here since she was a kid.

"Definitely in the summer time its a once a week if not every other day thing," said Pace. "Just to get the kids out of the house and you know its a really nice playground to come to."

Picnicana Park now has pickle-ball courts, and basketball courts were recently renovated.

But a big draw is the pavilion rentals.

"Some people rent the whole park," said Davis. "You get two kitchens, two pavilions and the run of the place its all yours for the day."

The rentals are available every September 15th, with Township residents getting first dibs.

"It used to be a Black Friday event where they waited in the parking lot from midnight on, and just stood in line," said Davis.

And over the years, these picnic tables have hosted annual family gatherings, from reunions and more.

"There's been many graduation parties, birthday parties held here," said Pace. "It's been awesome."

But what's been most awesome, is the time spent enjoying the outdoors at a true Community Gem.
