Driving in the snow can difficult, especially if you just earned your driver's license or are new to the area.

Digital Producer Ariana Moyer, who is new to the Erie area, visited Transportation Solutions to learn how to drive in the winter weather.

Transportation Solutions offers the following Winter Driving Tips:

  • Accelerate slower so your tires don't spin
  • Brake gently so you don't slide!
  • Leave more space between vehicles while driving and when coming to a stop...more than the usual "four second rule"
  • Make sure your tires are in good condition and inflated to the proper PSI
  • Add weight in your trunk (cat litter - you can use it if you get stuck for traction)
  • On ice or snow covered roads, drive in a lower gear for added grip/traction.
  • Signal sooner to allow others to plan appropriately
  • Take advantage of gas station window cleaners: keep your windows and headlights clean
  • Removed ALL snow from your car before you leave - it is now a PA law that you have to remove ALL snow from your vehicle
  • Try not to let your gas gauge fall below 1/2 tank
  • Keep a safety kit in the car in case of emergency that includes: water, granola bar, blanket, flashlight, flares, candles, etc.
  • Carry a cell phone in case of emergency
  • Take the time on the first snow fall to go to an empty parking lot and hit the brakes to refresh yourself on how to control your vehicle
  • Know whether or not your have ABS brakes. If yes, keep your foot on the brake when braking. If no, pump your brakes
