Erie County Council Wednesday approved next year's budget, but it comes with some significant changes from the county executive's proposal.
The half-billion dollar budget counsel approved reinstates money for GECAC as well as the county summer jobs program.
But Diverse Erie, the county’s diversity, equity and inclusion commission received no additional money, with funding failing in two 4-3 votes.
Despite passing a budget, several council members warn that difficult times lie ahead, saying a tax increase next year is likely.
Others, however, are more optimistic.
"Next year is going to be an exciting year," said County Council President Brian Shank to Erie News Now. "The county executive and I have some exciting plans, and I wish I could share them with you today. I'll tell you this right now, if there is a tax increase this year, I will take you to lunch. If there's a tax increase next year, I will take you both to lunch."
"A lot of adjustments and tweaking had to be done, and quite honestly, I regard the budget as reckless and irresponsible," said Vice-Chairwoman Mary Rennie. "We made it through. It's going to be a difficult one next year, though."
The county executive can still veto parts of the budget.
Erie News Now is continuing to follow the budget process and will publish a more-detailed look at the budget once it becomes final.
