Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 19-year-old Erie man for drinking underage and driving under the influence after leading troopers on a high-speed chase overnight.

It started around 1 a.m. Sunday when State Police tried to pull over a Nissan Altima traveling south on Interstate 79 for speeding.

The driver failed to stop and led police on a pursuit with speeds reaching in excess of 120 mph, according to troopers.

The vehicle exited onto Interchange Rd., proceeded west on Zimmerly Rd. and failed to follow a curve in the road while going more than 100 mph, State Police said.

The vehicle then hit a utility pole, gas meter and overturned before coming to a rest in the parking lot of First Alliance Church.

An 18-year-old passenger in the vehicle was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said.

The driver was treated and released at the same hospital; he was arrested after being found under the influence of alcohol and drugs, according to State Police.

He faces charges including aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle, driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding a police officer, reckless driving and minor prohibited with alcohol, as well as several traffic violations.

The crash also caused numerous power outages. It is expected to be restored Sunday.
