Opening weekend of Pennsylvania's rifle deer hunting season is in the books, and state game wardens are calling it a success.

If you didn't bag a buck or a doe, the season continues through Dec. 10.

It's been a safe deer season so far, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. They hope hunters continue to follow basic firearm and tree stand safety.

Hunters were following the rules for tagging the deer they harvested, according to state game wardens.

A lot of hunters were out on opening day Saturday, especially with the great weather. They saw lots of families mentoring kids.

"It's something we see every year," said Andrew Heuser, game warden. "It's a really strong Pennsylvania tradition. Moving the Saturday opener from Monday allowed families that have busy weekend schedules - kids in sports and that kind of thing - to really go out and enjoy a hunting day together. We saw a lot of mentoring opportunities and lot of kids out with their parents. It was great to see."

If you do harvest a deer, you are required to report that to the Game Commission within 10 days to help them keep an accurate count on the season.
