JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – A policy that froze Chautauqua County’s gas tax ends on Thursday.

Over the summer, the Chautauqua County Legislature passed what’s known as a “Gas Tax Holiday” in an effort to provide some relief for drivers at the pump; setting the tax cap at .12 cents.

The move followed a similar measure implemented across New York State in the Spring, which suspended the 8-cent per gallon motor fuel tax and 8-cent per gallon sales tax through December 31.

However, some locals argued that both the county and state measures did not do enough, in fact, Chautauqua County’s Executive feels the tax holiday provided little to no relief at all.

As of now, there is no plan to renew the policy going forward.

As of Wednesday morning, AAA reported the average price for a gallon of gas in Chautauqua County at $3.81 a gallon with New York State’s average price at $3.49 a gallon.
