Democratic Party Votes to Censure Erie County Councilman
The Erie County Democratic Party voted unanimously Saturday to censure Erie County Councilman Jim Winarski.
The party said it's because he voted for a Republican to chair council in 2022 and 2023, ceding control to the minority Republican party.
Winarski, a former Erie city councilman, was elected to the fourth district county council seat in 2021, creating a four person democratic majority.
In a statement, Erie Democrats said, "He has continuously voted with the Republican minority and failed to support his Democrat peers for leadership."
They censured Winarski "for repeatedly failing to vote in the best interests of his party and the voters of council district 4," the statement said.
There's no teeth to the censure, other than to express public disappointment.
Erie News Now reached out to councilman Winarski for reaction, but there has been no reply as yet.
