Special Olympics Recognizes General McLane as a National Banner Unified Champion School
General McLane was the first school in Northwest, Pennsylvania to be recognized and selected by the Special Olympics as a National Banner Unified Champion School.
General McLane raised the banner on Friday as a nationally recognized unified school for their excellence in inclusionary practices.
Only 110 elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the country are awarded with this honor each year.
General McLane was announced as a 2022 winner in September. Their Unified program includes around 100 students that is growing in numbers and interest.
"It's definitely a team effort," said Mike Cannata, Director of Student Services. "From the teachers, the coaches that run it and most importantly the students that are involved in it and building those relationships with each other and working together as a team to promote those inclusionary practices to make this beneficial for all those involved."
The General McLane Unified Track and Field team of one of only 4 programs like it in the states.
