Police arrested a man who is accused of shooting another driver following an accident on Interstate 79 in the City of Erie on Monday.

Alexander Peyton, 27, of Erie, faces charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, receiving stolen property, theft by unlawful taking, possession of a weapon, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle, driving without a license and careless driving.

He was arraigned Thursday morning and sent to the Erie County Prison on $150,000 bond.

The shooting happened near W. 12th St. and Lincoln Ave. around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

The victim - a 58-year-old man - was in critical condition after being shot in the neck. He called 911 to report he had been shot, someone had taken his phone and the man left in a Jeep, according to the criminal complaint.

Police used surveillance video to track the Jeep back to an address on Cascade St. in the City of Erie. They obtained a search warrant for the residence where they found multiple guns and took Peyton into custody, the criminal complaint said.

While interviewed by police, Peyton said he was in a vehicle accident on I-79 northbound just south of W. 12th St., and he took off because he did not have a driver's license.

The other vehicle followed him until he eventually stopped, according to police. Peyton then got of the vehicle and confronted the driver who was still in his vehicle.

Peyton took out a hand gun and shot the victim before taking off, the criminal complaint said.

Police said the Jeep Patriot was seized and had damage from the crash. The 9 mm handgun he used was also found when police searched the residence.
