Erie City's street department continues the good fight against the menace of the road ways-- potholes.

Spring rains are just as bad as the freeze thaw effect of the winter when it comes to breaking up asphalt. The water drains into cracks and vehicles keep hitting the weak spot, all leading to the creation of a new pothole.

The department aims for a 12 hour turn around for potholes called in on their hotline.

Five to six crews are out daily filling and patching, as well as splitting the city into sections to canvas when the hotline holes are filled.

Recently, they split up and focused on the west side of Erie, so these next few days will focus on the east.

Jeff Gibbens, the bureau of streets chief, says the city started experimenting with a new patching mix last year and have kept using it this season.

"It held up to what the manufacturer said it does. It's pretty much a permanent patch even though it's cold, so we don't have as many repeat potholes to fill like we've had in the past." Gibbens said.

The streets bureau chief also urges Erie City residents to call their pothole hotline at 814-870-1340.
