ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)-- A deadly elementary school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee marked the United State's 13th school shooting in 2023.

Some state lawmakers said while New York has some of the strongest gun control laws in the nation, federal action is lacking. They said guns travel into New York from other states and stronger federal legislation would help combat this issue.

The only way to truly stop the flow of guns coming into New York is for Washington to at long last action, clear action, to stem the flow of guns everywhere in the country and certainly right here into New York,” Senator John Liu (D-16th Senate District).

Sen. Liu said the legislature is looking at additional ways to curb gun violence in the state including continuing to strengthen gun control laws and providing schools with more security resources.

“We need to do everything we possibly can to keep our little kids, our children safe in their schools,” he said.

Some other lawmakers said one of the ways New York can help combat gun violence is investing more funds into mental health resources.

“We should be focusing a lot more on improving our mental health response to things,” Sen. Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats).
