The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is looking for volunteers ready to adopt-a-highway this spring.

The program asks citizens to step up and help clear away litter from state owned roads. There are 2,700 miles of road available in District 1 (Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango, Warren). Anyone who is interested in participating can visit adoptahighway.penndot.gov to sign up.

Volunteers take on a two mile stretch of road. The state provides equipment like gloves, trash bags, safety vests and more. They can also pick up the trash once its gathered.

Saxon Daugherty, a PennDOT spokesperson, says you do not need to be a big group to volunteer. Churches, schools, families and even individuals can take on the task. Once signed up, the program asks adopters to commit to clean their section twice a year for two years.

"Anytime we see litter, that's going to damage the environment and the habitats that we and animals live in," said Daugherty. "It also doesn't look great. It's a bad look for Pennsylvania. And we want it to be clean and keep Pennsylvania beautiful. There's lots of organizations devoted to this type of initiative and PennDOT is proud to be part of it. But we need the help."

Last year, District 1 had 520 groups adopt 1,300 miles of road.
