ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)-- Monday, the Senate voted in a confirmation hearing to advance Gov. Kathy Hochul's new nomination for the chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, to the floor for a vote.

Following the rejection of Hochul's first chief judge nomination earlier this year, Hochul's new nominee, Judge Rowan Wilson, was met with strong support among Democratic lawmakers.

Wilson has served on the Court of Appeals as an Associate Judge since 2017. In his opening statement, he said he would bring his years of experience and love of the law to the chief judge role.

“I understand the position of chief judge requires love of the law, honesty, open mindedness and tireless devotion. That is the essence of what I have to offer,” said Chief Judge Nominee Rowan Wilson.

Throughout his confirmation hearing lawmakers questioned Judge Wilson about previous prosecutions and how he intends to lead the courts in New York.

If confirmed by the full Senate, Wilson would be the first Black man to serve as chief judge for the Court of Appeals.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on this nomination Tuesday on the Senate floor.
