Million Dollar Study Proposed To Examine Chautauqua Lake
MAYVILLE, NY (WNY News Now) – A one-million-dollar study to further examine the weed and algae problem on Chautauqua Lake is up for a vote this week.
On Wednesday the Chautauqua County Legislature will vote on funding a study, which could ultimately create a scientific research facility with a goal of bringing solutions to help control harmful algal blooms not just in Western New York, but across the state and nation.
Using American Rescue Plan Act funding the Jefferson Project would continue their research on the aquatic ecosystem. In previous years scientists deployed a sensor to measure the water’s chemistry.
$250,000 dollars has already been committed to funding research on the subject.
In a separate measure to establish a permanent funding source to assist with environmental cleanup efforts, an annual boat fee is also a proposed revenue option.
