Governor Josh Shapiro visited Erie Thursday, touting a budget proposal that could help local seniors. The governor visited Erie West Senior Center, explaining a plan to increase the property tax/rent rebate program. Under his plan, more seniors would become eligible for up to $1,000 in tax rebates, provided they make less than $45,000 a year. Right now, it's just a budget proposal, but it's one with fairly strong bipartisan support in Harrisburg. Local seniors say they hope the idea becomes part of the budget, saying financial concerns keep them from enjoying their retirements.
"We all have those bill that come up like car insurance or a car repair. Or your friends will want to go out, and you have to say, 'I'm sorry, I can't go,' said Mary Szymanowski. "Things that used to be affordable just aren't affordable anymore."
Pennsylvania lawmakers are currently reviewing the budget proposal.
