Fire at Elk Valley Elementary Keeps Students Out of School
Classes were canceled at Elk Valley Elementary in Girard, as crews worked to repair the school after a fire on Sunday night.
Administrators say students will need to stay out of the school for a few more days, so they're making plans for rest of the week.
District officials say the fire started around 9:30 p.m. in a first grade classroom where students were hatching chicks with a heat lamp. The fire was contained to one room, but because smoke filled the school, students couldn't safely return on Monday.
"Last night I called parents to say one day, but after talking to the department of education and people who have dealt with this before, they said we're going to stay out for the rest of the week," said Donna Miller, Girard School District Superintendent. "So, that's switching up our thought process here, and we're making plans on how we're going to continue educating the students."
No one was hurt in the fire, and district leaders say they're fortunate the fire happened when no students were in the school.
