A boy is dead following a crash on Interstate 90 in western Erie County on Monday.

It happened around 2:40 p.m. just east of the Girard exit in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

A 44-year-old semi driver from Michigan failed to notice a number of vehicles that had stopped on the highway in front of him.

The tractor trailer slammed into a stopped vehicle and caused a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles.

A 10-year-old boy was a passenger inside the first vehicle hit. He died in the crash.

His name has not been released. The family was from Canada, according to police.

This was one of multiple crashes in the area Monday.

State police reopened the impacted stretch of Interstate 90 to traffic shortly before midnight.

PennDOT is urging caution in this area of I-90 as construction will continue throughout the summer.
