Pride Books Relocated from Library Display
Pride books on a display at the Erie County Public Library were relocated after residents expressed concerns about the display. The library sets books on display that are specific to different topics during different months. With June being Pride Month, Pride Books were on display until Erie County Public Library Executive Director, Karen Pierce, started to receive complaints about the books and determined the books should be taken off of the display.
In a statement, Erie County Public Information Officer, Chris Carroll said:
"Erie County is welcoming to all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. There are several displays related to Pride month in the library. We had a significant number of people express concerns about one display near the entrance to the children’s area. Out of respect for their concerns staff was asked to relocate that display away from the children’s area. An internal misunderstanding lead to the dismantling of the entire display rather than it being relocated.
The administration feels that the Erie County Public Library should be a welcoming place for all individuals. It is our policy that we respect everyone who is celebrating but are also sensitive to those who don’t wish to celebrate. The Library will remain a neutral place for all Erie County residents to enjoy."
Jacob Chemsak, a library patron, said these actions were discriminatory against a part of the Erie County community. "These actions isolate a portion of our community that is at a greater risk of suicide who are taught to hate themselves and are no less valuable, i feel that we need to show love and not hate and these actions put our children at a greater risk."
