A bill requiring poll worker training

ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)-- Legislation passed by state lawmakers this year will require the State Board of Elections to put a poll worker training curriculum in place.
Each county board would enroll two instructors for the certified poll worker training program.
Some Democratic lawmakers said this legislation will provide poll workers with more support.
“Helping folks to become more engaged in our democracy. Our poll workers are essential in that regard they are critical, and they are an integral link to ensuring that people in our communities have a full experience that’s positive as it relates to the power of voting,” said Sen. Lea Webb (D-52nd Senate District).
The training includes materials relating to diverse voters, professional delivery, and providing assistance to voters with disabilities and limited English-speaking skills.
Some advocates said a unified system of these training materials could encourage more New Yorkers to show up to the polls.
“If you have limited English proficiency and you’re a little bit nervous about maybe encountering a question you might not be expecting, for some folks that might mean you don’t go to vote that day,” said Erica Smitka, Legislative Director of the League of Women Voters.
Some Republican lawmakers said this legislation while important, could be financially challenging to implement.
“It’s a good idea to have standard protocols and teaching of the poll workers, but if you’re going to require it in a specific way and a certain number of times, then the state should be providing funding for that,” said Sen. Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats).
The training intends to be available both in person and virtually.
This bill is one of hundreds on the Governor's desk for her review.
