Trucking Companies Looking to Hire More Drivers
For the past several years, America has seen a truck driver shortage which may have effected how quickly people receive their products.
A hiring event on Saturday hoped to change that.
"The trucking industry is a way to keep America running. If we don't have trucks on the road, America comes to a stop", explained Dale Knox Dale, a former truck driver and current Transport Safety Specialist for Vorziq Trucking.
Knox just retired after being on the roads for over four decades. "For 43 years the trucking industry was fantastic. I raised my kids in the trucking industry when I retired I was making some of six figures. College degree is fine, but the trucking industry, you can get into that and make it as much as college degrees", said Knox.
Recent retires is one of the many reasons why the trucking industry is short of thousands of drivers. As Rebecca Oylar, the President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association explained, "It's short almost 80,000 drivers across the nation and that is expected to grow over the next couple of years as well. So we're doing what we can to educate folks about the great opportunities that are available in the trucking industry, both with drivers and diesel techs and a lot of other opportunities in the industry."
Prospective drivers could learn more about the industry and even test drive the trucks during a hiring event on Saturday.
"It's kind of hard to break through sometimes to, you know, high school students, young people to make sure that they understand that there really are great careers available in the trucking industry. They don't require a college education", explained Oylar.
Local trucking companies hoped that people young and old will consider a career in trucking and hoped these events all add a few more drivers to the road to combat the nationwide shortage.
