CDC Recommends Updated COVID Booster Shot for Everyone Ages 6 Months and Older
The CDC is recommending everyone ages six months and older to get an updated COVID vaccine this fall.
The organization made the announcement on Tuesday, after approving updated boosters for Pfizer and Moderna.
Both UPMC Hamot and AHN Saint Vincent are preparing for additional booster supplies.
"We knew that we would likely be dealing with variants of the COVID virus for years to come," said AHN Saint Vincent CEO Dr. Chris Clark. "We are following precautions that are put out there by the CDC."
The boosters come as COVID cases continue to rise across the United States, including in Erie.
"We have not really seen an increase in severe illness," said UPMC Hamot Chief Nursing Officer Jim Donnelly. "We have seen an increase in the individuals who present with COVID or discover to have COVID after admission."
Once the vaccines are available, both hospitals will provide boosters to higher-risk populations at who are based on the CDC's recommendation.
"Based on historical perspectives, I would expect them to identify certain younger populations, and then individuals over the age of 60," said Donnelly. "The COVID vaccine will now be just like any other preventative vaccine. You can get it through your provider and pharmacies."
For the first time, the cost of the shots will not be covered by the federal government.
"Funding for COVID in general has changed in the last few months," said Dr. Clark. "With regards to the vaccines, it's going to be much like with how the flu vaccine is treated or any other vaccinations for the populations that we serve."
Meanwhile, those who test positive for COVID are urged to stay home and isolate for five days, regardless of vaccination status.
