New Data About Substance Abuse Disorders and Treatments in Erie
Substance abuse disorders continues to effect thousands of people every day and it's shown in Gaudenzia's latest front line report which provides the most recent data on those battling addiction and the treatment they are receiving.
"Our goal here has pivoted some to not just be a treatment provider and to help people when they are here, but to also keep people alive, so when they are ready, we are here so that they can enter", said Dr. Dale Klatzker, the President and CEO of Gaudenzia.
The report highlights several states, including Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania where Gaudenzia provides treatment.
Within the past year in Erie County, Gaudenzia has helped over 1,140 people ranging in age from under 18 to 55 and older. The report also showed that in Erie County, stimulants use increased and was the drug of choice compared to alcohol and opioids, which saw a decline this past year.
Harm reduction as a form of healthcare was another topic from the report which is a softer approach to people who may not be ready to be full change in their lives. "I think there's an unevenness to harm reduction capacity across the state, I think that the largest urban areas, Philadelphia, I'm most familiar with Harrisburg, Pittsburgh have some great providers, who are doing remarkable work, but I think it's maybe spotter in other parts of the state", said Dr. Klatzker.
Another notable takeaway included how many people who were admitted to Gaudenzia reported a second abuse disorder or a mental issue. Experts said while these were all serious issues, fentanyl continues to be a top concern.
