Our Kara Jeffers explains some of the behind the scenes action that leads to parts shortages when auto strikes start.

For those who need car repairs locally, dealers and shops knew the UAW strike was coming and many stocked up on generic parts-- like oil pans and windshield wipers.

However if anyone has a part on a vehicle that is more company specific- such as a body panel- parts shortages due to strikes at distribution centers will be felt soon.

Even if the strike were to end today, there would be a ripple of disruption in parts. 3rd party manufacturers made parts and shipped them to auto maker distribution centers, where hundreds of trailers sit unemptied across the nation. It will take time to process the back up that already exists.

The question of if that disruption will stay minor or increase to additional months long waits for parts is directly correlated to the length of the strike.
