Erie Events Concession Stands Going Cashless

No more cash will be accepted at concession stands at Erie Insurance Arena, the Warner Theatre and the Bayfront Convention Center.
Only cashless payment methods will be accepted.
"[The] number one reason is because it gets people quicker through lines," Executive Director of Erie Events Gus Pine said. "You don't have cashiers who have to handle cash and then handle your food."
Pine and his team considered all the options, and at the end of the day, speed was a big influence in the decision to go cashless.
"It 100% makes it quicker when you're talking about moving people in and out of buildings at such a large scale," Pine said. "Seconds and minutes matter to be able to get people back to their seats.
Pine mentioned that 80% of their customers already choose on their own to use a card, adding that some venues tack on a service charge, but that is something Erie Events will not do.
Reactions have been pouring in from the Erie Community, with some Erie residents being against it. Others, not so much.
"It's convenient," said Erie resident Jim Sauer.
And some, like Dena Oliver, say they are not sure.
"I'm in between," Oliver said. "Because yes, I have a debit card. But yeah, sometimes I have cash on me."
The Erie Events box office will continue to accept cash for payment along with credit and debit cards. Cash will also be accepted at all parking garages.
The first cashless event will take place this Saturday, Sept. 30, with the Erie Otter's home opener at Erie Insurance Arena. The Warner Theatre will implement the policy at "An Evening With Whitney Cummings" on Oct. 13, followed by the Strongman National Championships on Oct. 20 and 21 at the Bayfront Convention Center.
