New update on migrant crisis from Gov. Hochul

ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)-- Monday Gov. Kathy Hochul announced 18,000 jobs available for asylum seekers with nearly 400 employers who are willing to hire migrants and asylum seekers with a legal work status.
“The key is so simple, it’s so crystal clear. They came to work, so let’s put them to work,” said Hochul.
The announcement comes a month after Gov. Hochul directed the New York State Department of Labor to begin connecting businesses with job openings to migrants and asylum seekers with a legal work authorization.
The Governor said it's important for the economy and humanitarian aid to fill these job openings.
“That can help solve our problems and at least be a start toward reducing the number of people who need shelter in our city,” she said.
Through the New York State Department of Labor, asylum seekers with work authorization can register for assistance.
The Governor also announced a public awareness campaign to help employers find and hire asylum seekers. The Department of Labor will also expand their outreach efforts to employers via social media and digital channels.
