PENNCREST School Board Faces Parent Backlash Over Plans for New Superintendent
The Cambridge Springs High School auditorium filled up with concerned parents, students and community members.
For this special voting meeting, many voiced their concerns about the PENNCREST Board's process, and unexpected plans to vote in a new superintendent.
"The decision was to advertise according to some of the board members, and then the next thing we know or all of a sudden we have a special meeting to potentially appoint the superintendent. They've never advertised for this position. This is ludicrous. This is the most important position in our district. We advertise for a part time cafeteria worker, part time custodial worker. Why would we not advertise for a superintendent?," said one concerned community member, Delores Hale.
Hale said she hopes that the board will decide to take more time and go through the correct procedures.
“They should advertise for the job for 30 days. They should then interview all the candidates, narrow it down, have second eyes. . .The process should take three to four months,” Hale said.
A concerned parent Carla Brown also agrees that there should have been more advertising about the open position.
“I believe that this school board has a habit of going about things the wrong way, and they haven't even actually created a vacancy, let alone [they] appointed someone to fill a vacancy that doesn't exist yet,” Brown said.
Senior at Saegertown High School Lawrynn Zorian Edwards is hoping that whoever does end up as superintendent will work with and for the students of the district.
“I'm just worried about whoever's going to replace Glasspool. He was an amazing superintendent. He was very well-educated, very good at his job, and whoever's going to replace him is going to have some big shoes to fill. So want to make sure that they’re qualified,” Edwards said.
The board did end up voting, eight in favor and one against, to table the decision and not appoint a new superintendent contract.
