ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)-- A new law intends to help New Yorkers recovering from a miscarriage or stillbirth.

SOME LAWMAKERS SAID THIS WILL HELP CLOSE THE INFORMATION GAP AND ENSURE NEW YORKERS HAVE ACCESS TO RECOVERY RESOURCES.

“Women and anyone who has lost an infant, or a pregnancy don’t know what to expect with their bodies, especially if it’s the first time,” said Sen. Nathalia Fernandez (D-34th Senate District).

FERNANDEZ SAID MANY WOMEN ARE UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO WHEN THEIR BODIES PRODUCE MILK, WHILE EXPERIENCING THIS KIND OF LOSS.

THE NEW law REQUIRES THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO CREATE PAMPHLETS INCLUDING INFORMATION ABOUT LOCAL RESOURCES SUCH AS MILK BANKS, WHERE WOMEN CAN DONATE PUMPED MILK, MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FREE GYNECOLOGICAL CARE, AND postpartum DOULA SERVICES.

“This is information that we need to know to begin the healing process, to have a healthy healing process and to ease the pain a little bit of what happens. You know, that is a traumatic experience,” said Fernandez.

THE INFORMATION WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE STATEWIDE THROUGH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT’S MATERNAL HEALTH WEBSITE AND HEALTHCARE PROVIdERS.
