Crescent Hose Company Fire Captain Mike Kelley explains how two firefighters were feet away from being seriously injured while responding to a call Saturday morning.

"There was road flares on the roadway as well as emergency lights activated on a fire truck, turnout gear being worn with reflective vests by the firefighters on scene and the vehicle in question drove erratically towards the firefighters, did a rapid lane change causing another vehicle to slam on their brakes and came between four to 10 feet of hitting either one of the two firefighters that were standing there," Kelley recalled.

After the near miss occurred, Kelley then called Crescent Hose Company Fire Chief Dave Meehl who could not help but fear for his members' lives.

"When Mike got a hold of me and said they had a close call it just took my breath away, I said, oh no, not again, not another one of our girls or guys in the fire service, we can not go through this again," Meehl said.

PennDOT District 1 Safety Press Officer Saxon Daugherty said taking the time to make sure first responders are safe has a lot to do with respect.

"Just think if that was you or one of your close family members or friends out there you would want motorists to give them space and the respect that they deserve to be able to do their jobs, drive with that respect for other people just not only those that are driving but also those that are doing their job outside of a vehicle," Daugherty said.
