Mercyhurst University Opens New Greenhouse on Campus, Launches New Sustainability Major

Mercyhurst University is launching its latest green initiative, a campus greenhouse, while simultaneously announcing a new major in Sustainability Studies for Fall 2024.
The University will be hosting a launch party on Monday, November 20 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The launch party will be an opportunity for guests to tour the rooftop greenhouse, chat with professors, and learn about the new major.
The 16 x 24 greenhouse is made of polycarbonate and features seven benches, one sink with hose attachment, three grow lights to stimulate growth in winter and early spring, a shade cloth, and ventilation system.
Mercyhurst Associate Professor of Environmental Science Dr. Chris Dolanc said the green house serves three main functions: a conservatory for plants used in courses, exhibiting a wide variety of features to show students; a research facility for both students and faculty; and a resources to support the new Sustainability major and Environmental Science program.
More information on the new major and greenhouse can be found on Mercyhurst University's website.
