A Conneaut, Ohio man was killed Monday while trying to assist a stranded driver on Interstate 90 in Erie County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers were first called for a stopped truck in one of the westbound lanes near mile marker 12.6 around 5:38 p.m. when a crash was also reported.

Troopers said Jose M. Alicea Gonzalez, 69, was trying to jump a disabled vehicle when a semi hit an unoccupied vehicle which hit the disabled vehicle and Gonzalez.

Gonzalez suffered a broken neck and died instantly, according to state police.

The driver of the disabled vehicle - a 44-year-old Cleveland woman - was also hit in her face, investigators said. She was conscious but disoriented from the crash and taken to UPMC Hamot by ambulance with moderate injuries.

The semi involved in the crash went off the road, traveled down a ravine and ended up in Elk Creek, troopers said. The 68-year-old driver, who is from Ontario, Canada, was conscious but had to be extricated. He was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment.

The westbound lanes of Interstate 90 were closed in the area and reopened around 10:14 p.m.
